I swear Kirby knows when a package is for him. He was so excited when I brought it inside but "mean mama" made him wait until after he had eaten his supper.

Then I took the package, with him right on my heels, outside so I could take some pictures in good light. The first picture was the amazing drawing on the back of the package of V, Eve, and Falcor. They have a very talented mama!

Next, Kirby sniffed the box. His reaction (barks, whines, wiggles) let me know there was something tasty in that box!

He was immediately alerted to the fact there must be something a cat would want when Chelsea came forward to investigate. He seemed resigned to sharing if only I would PLEASE open the box!

Out of the box yet wrapped with ribbon and a bow he sniffed further, ever closer to that delightfully odorous object he so yearned to taste.

At last the ribbon was removed and he could dig deeper. Here's a really cute video of what Kirby found in that paper...

A short time later this was all I could find. Master Kirby looked quite satisfied.

Kirby also received a fun cloth ball which I need to videotape. It's soft enough I can throw it at him which makes him so silly. He also received a cool bandana in his signature colors! His cat sisters, Chelsea and Kaitlyn, also got some love - tasty treats they gobbled up!

Kirby eats a variety of foods including dehydrated brands, top kibble brands, and homemade. I felt compassion for the pet parents who purchase the recalled foods but wasn't worried about Kirby until Taste of The Wild was added to the list! Absolute panic set in! Since I hadn't kept the original bag I rushed the Kirbster to his vet.

He had been lethargic and not eating much which we had attributed to the heat. He had even eaten grass and vomited a few times which I pushed aside as normal for dogs. His symptoms were scarily close to mild salmonella so we chose to have him tested. Poor baby didn't much care for Dr. Rita scooping you know what from his rear but he was a good little trouper.

The good news is his tests came back negative. The bad news was he started feeling better after about four days on an antibiotic so we knew he had gotten a touch of something! Unless I know not only what ingredients are used but also where the product is manufactured Kirby will not be eating their kibble. Hence, I am now foraging into new territory as we discover easy, healthy homemade meals Kirby enjoys.

Please, before I get comments about how his meals may not have all the nutrients his body needs, let me say I have discussed this with his veterinarian. He will be taking a vitamin supplement daily! I'm not an expert so I really can't measure and add all the ingredients the experts say he must have. Common sense, on the other hand, tells me a variety of healthy, good foods can supply his nutritional needs quite well! Heck, my children were healthy eating balanced meals with a daily vitamin. I also know there are different foods I crave which is my body telling me it needs a little of this or that.

Ingredients

3 cups beef stew

3 garlic cloves, crushed

1 tsp sea salt (No table salt)

2 tbsp light olive oil

3 cups beef broth

3 tbsp coconut flour*

2 cups potatoes, peeled**

2 cups broccoli florets

1 cup baby carrots

3 small yellow squash

1 red apple, peeled and cored

Directions

Cut meat into 1 inch cubes and place in crockpot.

Add garlic, sea salt, and olive oil. Whisk the flour into the beef broth and add to pot. I use Savory Choice beef broth concentrate but you can use water.

Stir and cook on high setting for one hour.

While this is cooking prepare the remaining ingredients. Chop the vegetables to desired size keeping in mind that dogs have a harder time digesting these foods. For Kirby I like them to be somewhere between finely chopped and shredded. The apple gives a nice sweetness but I have also seen where an orange is used instead. Either would work.

After the meat has cooked for 1 hour, remove the garlic. A small amount is considered to be very good for repelling fleas but a bite of pure garlic would be deadly! You can omit the garlic if you prefer.

Toss in the veggies and apple and cook on low for 6 to 7 hours or until the stew reaches the desired texture. Let cool and serve.

This smells so good, why not feed Fido his then grab some thick crsty bread, ladle a bowl for yourself, add some seasonings, and enjoy a hearty meal with your fluffy furiend!

Preparing homemade food is time consuming. However, once a batch is cooked it can be frozen in serving sizes for quick and easy feedings. This recipe made eleven 1 cup servings. I freeze Kirby's food in 2 cup containers (1 cup per meal) so in the morning I can set one container in the fridge to thaw. He is spoiled so I heat his dinner for twenty seconds in the microwave.

* the flour is used to thicken the stew broth. I like coconut flour for the health benefits but you can use any flour you have on hand.

** I used Honey Gold potatoes but any white potato will work. Once I peel them I place them in a bowl of cool water. As I chop each one I place the pieces back in the water. Reason one is to keep them from turning brown. Reason two is so I can drain the water which removes some of the starch.

Note: I purchased 2 lbs of stew meat so I had enough to prepare his favorite treat for training!

Do you want to take just a few steps outside your door to experience the culture, the boutiques and art galleries, the variety of Creole, Cajun, French and Italian restaurants, the unique atmosphere you can only find in the heart of the French Quarter? Then you want to stay at the Ursuline Guest House!

The Ursuline Guest House is like stepping back in time with an eclectic mix of old and new steeped in the history of the city. The main house sits right on the street with a front room used as the office with beckoning tables and chairs. The staff was always friendly and helpful whether it was someone at the front desk or the girl who cleaned our room. We felt like we were family!

Two guest rooms open directly onto the street itself. The main house contains 7 more guest rooms which open to the courtyard. Rooms 7 through 12 are the former slave quarters behind the main house and also open to the courtyard.

Obviously this isn't the Ritz but if you're looking for clean, comfortable accommodations you will love the Ursuline Guest House. All rooms have televisions, heating/air conditioning, and private bathrooms with showers (I'm told one guest room does have a tub). The rooms are spacious and the beds quite comfortable. The bathroom was simple but large enough that Doug and I never got in the other's way. Personally I'm a bath girl but give me a shower cap and I can adjust!

When we arrived the room we had booked was not available so they gave us an upstairs room which looked out over the courtyard.

It was a lovely room but those stairs were treacherous! The next morning they graciously moved us to the room we had originally reserved on the ground floor. I think they just couldn't bear to see Kirby tackle the stairs one more time since they were so steep he looked as if he would take a tumble at any step.

Both rooms were nice but being on the ground floor was so much easier to manage as we were in and out on a pretty regular basis.

I absolutely loved every historic inch of this little guest house. We had a key to our room and a key to the gate from the street which led to the secluded courtyard, a private sanctuary from the hustle and bustle right outside. There was a hot tub tucked away in the back which we used our last night and a daily wine and cheese hour every day at 6pm. At times there were as many as fifteen people gathered in the courtyard and yet it never felt crowded.

A small door at the back of the main house led to a small guest kitchen which was fully stocked with everything you could need if you wanted to prepare your own meals.

I headed there first thing in the mornings for my cup of coffee to enjoy in the courtyard with any of the other guests who were up. They do have a continental breakfast consisting of your choice of packaged pastries and cereals, coffee, juice and milk. Nothing fancy but nice if you're hungry!

The lush greenery providing a tropical shade, the water gurgling in the nearby fish pond, and the musical sounds of the birds chirping in the trees is such a wonderful way to start each day. We were fortunate that the other guests were friendly and fun to hang out with! Kirby was loved by all and enjoyed visiting some of the guests in their rooms. You would have thought he was the guest house mascot but in truth I think several were missing their furry babies back home and Kirby was more than happy to make them feel better.

We learned this guest house had just been purchased by a hotel chain so I really hope they don't change a thing! The location, the accommodations, the price, make this a really nice place to stay. Being pet friendly is the icing on the cake since Kirby felt very much at home, so much that he had no problem wandering the rooms visiting with the guests who adored him. He was always well behaved although he did bark a time or two at night when he heard someone wandering by our door but quickly quieted as asked. We do hope to visit this lovely gem again!
